Congratulations to Mark Smalley on earning CrossFit Sixth City Sweatiest Angel for the month of December, 2017!
The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to the Sixth City athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others, and a true sense of team camaraderie inside the gym.
Mark has been with us for over three years and is a regular weekender. As someone who travels a great deal for work, Mark always makes it a priority to make it to his Saturday and Sunday workouts. In fact, he has missed very few over the last couple years. As you will learn in his interview below, Mark is also our resident comedian, and loves sarcastic CrossFit jokes. But don’t let that fool you, he also works his butt off and has been able to accomplish a great deal of health and wellness triumph through his consistency. His cholesterol and triglyceride number are down significantly, and Mark’s accomplishing things in class that he never thought he would do in workouts.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Mark: I have been working out at CSC for 3.5 Years. However, I have been maintaining an active fit lifestyle crossing multiple exercise genres for years upon years.
What do you do when you are not at CSC (hobbies, occupation, etc)?
Mark: I spend time with my Treeing Walker Coonhound named Casey. I am a subscriber at Playhouse Square and Cleveland International Film Festival. I volunteer on the Alumni boards of my MBA and law schools as well as PBS and NPR stations. I support our local sports teams. I enjoy the City Club forums. Most importantly, I am a licensed joyologist.
What is your favorite WOD/movement?
Mark: Riding the pole at Magic City.
What is your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?
Mark: Showing up on time.
When did you come to find CrossFit and realize it was for you?
Mark: Let’s not get too sentimental. I am too poor to afford all of the plastic surgery necessary to maintain my superficial lifestyle and the magic pill has yet to be invented. So, CrossFit it is.
What were your expectations when you started CrossFit?
Mark: To be the sweatiest angel within 6 months of enrollment. Three and a half years later; here I am.
What are your goals for CrossFit?
Mark: To never have the coaches call my emergency contact.
What has your experience been with CrossFit?
Mark: Work. Pain. Gain. Rinse. Repeat.
One thing you’ve done at CSC you never thought you would do?
Mark: Sing along to gangsta rap; but you kids today…
What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?
Mark: Some my view my anointing as sweatiest angel as my clever rouse gaming an entitlement system. Others may see this as a long overdue recognition of my hard work and effort. Each pathway has its merits. We may never know why I was chosen as sweatiest angel, but we all know that I make good choices. My advice is that the investment in yourself is a good choice. Even the minimum standard with reasonable accommodations can produce results.
