Sweatiest Angel Award – September 2017

Congratulations to the CrossFit Sixth City Sweatiest Angel for the month of September, Allayna Widlits!

The Sweatiest Angel award is given each month to the Sixth City athlete who displays significant work ethic, a willingness to support others, and a true sense of team camaraderie inside the gym.

 

Allayna is a shining example of what can happen when someone that is nervous about trying something new faces their fears and does something that scares them. She started with us early in the Summer with our 6 Week New You Women’s Challenge with the goal of trying something new, losing a few pounds and becoming a little bit fitter in the process. Over the last 6 months Allayna has accomplished that and much more. She has lost a ton of weight (28 lbs) and gained a ton of strength.

One of the most common things we hear from people interested in CrossFit is that they don’t believe they are not in good enough shape to do CrossFit as a regular fitness program. Usually there is no rational reasoning for this, they simply are comparing their own fitness level to that of the athletes commonly seen on television, and that intimidates them. Allayna was one of those people when we first met. Thankfully we were able to convince her to give the 6 Week Challenge a try. She has gone from barely being able to run to competing a mile during workouts; being scared of deadlifting to nearing 300 lbs on her max lift. How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Allayna: I’ve been doing CrossFit for 6 months total.  I started out with the 6 week New You Challenge.

What do you do when you are not at CSC?

Allayna: When I’m not at CSC I work at Hospice of the Western Reserve at one of the in-patient units. And when I am not working I like to spend time baking, playing video games, and hanging with friends and family.

What is your favorite WOD/movement?

Allayna: My favorite movement is a toss up between deadlifts and handstand push-ups.

What is your LEAST favorite WOD/movement?

Allayna: My least favorite movement would be snatches, though I hope to make these one of my favorites in the future.

When did you come to find CrossFit and realize it was for you?

Allayna: I found CrossFit while doing one of my desperate searches to find a workout program for me.  I needed to find something that help me break my seemingly never ending cycle of weight loss.  I realized CrossFit was for me when I spent more time focusing on how I feel and less time worrying about how I looked and how much I weighed.

What were your expectations when you started CrossFit?

Allayna: When I first started CrossFit I was expecting it to be physically harder than I could handle.

What are your goals for CrossFit?

Allayna: One of my long term goals would be to deadlift in the 400’s and to be able to do a competition or two. A short term goal of mine is to be able to successfully complete Murph, scaled or not.

What has your experience been with CrossFit?

Allayna: My experience with CrossFit has been nothing but amazing.  It’s not at all what I expected it to be.  Not only do I get to train with amazing coaches, who push you before you know you need it, I am now a part of a great community who push each other to be their best.

One thing you’ve done at CSC you never thought you would do?

Allayna: I never thought I was cable of dead lifting 275 pounds, I mean come on, that’s just insane.

What advice would you give someone just starting CrossFit?

Allayna: The advice I would give someone just starting CrossFit is to realize, you may not be the fastest, you may not be the strongest, and you may not be the thinnest, but if you show up and give it your all, one day you will be.  Life begins outside your comfort zone, you just have to be brave enough to take a step out.
